Book Study Project - The book contains 7 Habits and within groups the students will read and create a presentation to share with the class.

In groups, the students will create a 20-30 minute presentation of their assigned chapter from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey. The purpose of this assignment is twofold: first the groups are to teach relevant information from their Habit to the class and also show that they have an understanding of their audience (teenagers) and can use tones, formats, styles and activities that accurately meet the needs of that audience.

Lesson Goals and Objectives

Students will:
  • adjust their use of spoken, written, and visual language to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes.
  • employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use different writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
  • conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions, and by posing problems. 
  • use a variety of technological and information resources (e.g., libraries, databases, computer networks, video) to gather and synthesize information and to create and communicate knowledge.
  • use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes (e.g., for learning, enjoyment, persuasion, and the exchange of information.)
  • explain ways in which ideas and information in a variety of forms connect to real-life situations and other texts .
  • Identify and explain in oral and written responses ways in which ideas and information in a variety of forms connect to and reflect life experiences.
  • solve problems using reasoning skills, including analyzing the relationships between prior knowledge and life experiences and information in texts. 
  • write for various purposes, including text-supported interpretations that connect life experiences to works of literature. 
  • use active listening strategies, including monitoring messages for clarity and selecting and organizing essential information. 
  • participate in group and panel discussions, including identifying the strengths and talents of other participants.

Their presentations will include the following: 

A PowerPoint presentation covering the information in the chapter (50 pts)
  1. Presentation should contain lesson objectives
  2. Graphic/Picture on EVERY slide (including title slide)
  3. MAX 6 – 8 words per bullet point
  4. Must include ALL important information from that chapter

A cartoon based on your habit using http://www.makebeliefscomix.com/Comix/ (50 pts)
  1. It must show several characters discussing the importance of adopting your habit.
  2. It must have at contain at least 3 strips

  1. Photomovie must have at least 15 slides
  2. Must include important information from the chapter
  3. Must include images AND text that explains the key components of you habit A handout (50 pts)
  4. Should go in the order of your slideshow
  5. That explains babysteps in your own words 

Ten question quiz (a blank quiz and an answer key) that accurately assesses how well your classmates learned the information from your chapter (50 pts)
  1. Ten Questions (should be a variety of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, etc.)
  2. Cover ALL the important information from the chapter
  3. Must provide the answers to your classmates after they are done taking the quiz and must be able to defend your answer. 

A poster (bigger than an 8.5x11 piece of printer paper) that gives a visual representation of your “habit” (50 pts)
  1. Use a poster board or Post It sheet (bigger than an 8.5”x11” piece of printer paper)
  2. Should be a visual representation of your habit
  3. Must be able to be read from anywhere in the class
  4. Hand-drawn pictures and pictures from the internet and magazines okay
  5. NEATNESS AND EFFORT COUNT!
